P & E
What It Is
What It Is Not
P & E: Progesterone and Estradiol
- P & E is a compound used to control ovulations in mares
and involves three different prescription drugs. The other drugs used are
prostin and hCG.
- It is a 19 day procedure and a calendar can be calculated at
http://www.evergreenequikits.com.
- It is an off-label use for mares.
- The usual dosage is 3cc per day for a 500kg / 1100 lb mare.
- It does NOT work unless the mare is cycling.
- It can be started at any point in the cycle.
- It is accurate with in 24 hours in 95% of the mares tested.
- P & E is to be stored at room temperature.
- P & E CANNOT make an infertile mare fertile! (But we have
some other ideas that may help. email or call 615-390-8773.)
What are the Applications and Advantages
- Embryo transfers, used to synchronize recipient mares and donor
mares.
- Fewer mares required as recipients.
- Shipped semen can be scheduled up to 19 days in advance and only one
shipment will be required per cycle.
- Mares should ovulate at a time that agrees with Delta rather than
Mother Nature unassisted.
- Stallion managers can better schedule the on-farm mares to be bred at
off peak days and spread the semen requirements more evenly.
- Reduced vet farm calls and the ability to combine several animals at
a time for vet checking.
- More than one insemination can be shipped in one container, thus
reducing pick up time or shipping cost.
- Mare owners may better schedule their time.
What are The Disadvantages of P & E?
- The shots are IM (intra muscular) every day.
- They must be given at the same time each day.
- Some site swelling might occur (though our mares have never
experienced that symptom).
- It is not well known and used in the veterinary community.
- It will not work during anestrus or other times that mares are in
transition.
